The only professional body exclusively representing fine art auctioneers and valuers in the UK.

The Society was formed in 1973 to provide a professional body for specialist firms throughout the United Kingdom. The membership currently includes one of the major London-based firms as well as a significant number of the leading provincial specialist auctioneers.

The members seek to provide a comprehensive and specialist service as auctioneers and valuers of antiques, fine art, jewellery and other chattels.

The Society aims to provide guidance to its members to ensure the highest possible standards of practice in all regards, and encouragement and reassurance to clients that their best interests will be served at all times.

Mission Statement
The Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers seeks to promote and encourage the highest standards of probity and ethics within the profession and to improve knowledge, with its members supporting the principles of service to all clients and transparency in all activities.

Experience and Expertise
Between them, the members of SOFAA have an unrivalled breadth of knowledge and experience. One of the basic tenents of membership of the Society is that proper research is undertaken when required. Such research and subsequent recommendations to clients may include a referral to another specialist. The declared aim of member firms is to achieve the best possible result for a client at all times .

  • Fieldings, with Will Farmer as their representative, and Piano Auctions with Sean McIlroy as theirs, were both elected Members at the June Committee Meeting.

    Additionally, Will Richards of Dreweatts was elected an Associate Member.

    Ewbank Clarke Gammon Wellers continues to expand, and Riddetts are now 'in association' with them. They retain an office at Bournemouth, but goods will be sold at Chris Ewbank's Send saleroom. Rodney Adams therefore becomes an Associate Member of Ewbanks Clarke Gammon Wellers and new Associate Members Stephen Ozier at Bournemouth and Timothy Duggan at Send were elected.

  • At the June Committee Meeting Graham Paddison was elected a Valuer Member of the Society. Now running his own Fine Art Valuation Consultancy from Hessle in East Yorkshire, this is the second time around for Graham who was previously a member as the representative of Brown and Co. at Brigg.

  • The 2010 AGM will be held on Thursday October 21st. at Woolley and Wallis, Salisbury.

    The Meeting will be followed by a private view of the forthcoming Clocks and Silver Sale, with a short talk by relevant specialists.

    After lunch there will be a guided tour of Mompesson House in the Close, followed by afternoon tea.

  • Cumbrian auctioneers Kendal Auction Rooms have changed name to Eighteen Eighteen Auctioneers as part of a rebranding exercise. They are targetting the new generation of buyers, who may not yet appreciate the advantages of buying at auction. Emphasising the benefits both of recycling and the  ease of bidding on line, the auctioneers have changed their sale calender to incorporate a monthly two day sale covering the whole range of goods offered.

  • With Clive Stewart-Lockhart's term of office coming to an end, Paul Viney, Chairman of Woolley and Wallis, the Salisbury-based Fine Art Auctioneers, has been elected to succeed him as the new Chairman of SOFAA. He began his career at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, then worked for the National Trust at Waddesdon Manor, the former Rothschild house near Aylesbury, before joining Phillips Auctioneers, where he was Vice President in New York for three years and European Director from 1986 until 1992. He is well known to Radio 2 listeners for his annual Children in Need auctions with Terry Wogan, Jimmy Young, Ken Bruce and others. He has lectured extensively.
